Good, so we’ve got that dreadful joke out of the way early on and now we can get on with the business of telling you about dumbwaiters. Much more likely to be found in the shape of service elevators these days, dumbwaiters really hark back to a bygone era of servants and majestic mansion houses where elegant and lavish dinner parties would be thrown.

Dumbwaiters are, essentially, a very small form of lift which would work on a system of pulley’s and opposing weights- they were originally designed to minimise the number of servants who were needed to be present in the room when a dinner party was being thrown and, whilst some of them still remain in domestic dwellings, they are now more commonly used in hotels and restaurants where the kitchen is on a different floor to the dining room or when food needs to be delivered to a room before it becomes cold. Food, or empty plates, would be placed into the shaft of the dumb waiter and then raised up or lowered down so that they could be collected at the other end- this ultimately meant that only one servant needed to be present to dish out the food and then clear the plates- the rest of the ‘downstairs’ people could wait below and get on with the washing up whilst the guests moved on to the drinking and smoking portion of their evening.

Benjamin Franklin was a huge fan of these types of lifts and he even suggested, in some quarters, to be one of the people who had a hand in inventing them- they are certainly conceived around his time- although one inventor has never been pinned down. In their domestic form they are now much more of a collectable novelty- there aren’t many people who use them seriously anymore; the advances in technology which mean we can keep food heated until it’s ready to eat and the fact that many houses are simply too small to accommodate a lift shaft such as the one a dumb waiter needs, means that they really have gone out of fashion for private use.

They are also quite rare in the kitchen and hospitality trade although this is where one is most likely to find them. It seems to be rather on-trend and in fashion at the moment to see your food cooked in front of you or to see the kitchen at least, and be able to savour the sights and smells of your food being prepared. Clearly, if the customers are sat in the same place as the food is being prepared, then a dumbwaiter most certainly isn’t necessary (even if a dumb waiter is almost always present). However, in more old-fashioned style restaurants where the kitchen is beneath the diners, or indeed in large hotels where the kitchen may be some way away from a guests room who has ordered room service, dumbwaiters offer a smaller and more compact alternative to the service lift which is their main rival (and of which there is information on this very website if you should so care to read about it).

It is highly possible that the technology behind dumbwaiters, and most certainly the idea behind them, is what led people to consider much more complex and technological lifts which would ultimately be able to carry passengers and heavy goods over much greater distances. When they first arrived, the dumbwaiters were a technical marvel and something which really latched onto the way of living at the time- much in the same way that modern-day lifts latch onto our desire for vertical high-rise living in the 21st Century.

If you are thinking of getting a dumbwaiter, either for your home or business then you should no they aren’t cheap- partiuvclarly if you are going for the former and plan to have one installed in your domestic dwelling. Because they are quite rare, and demand is not that high anymore, prices can be farely high and, if you decide to have one installed in your home from scratch then you should also consider the structural reworking which may very well need to be done in order for you to accommodate the dumbwaiter shaft and the safety-proofing of this which will also need to be done. Read the following articles on dumbwaiters and, hopefully, you should be slightly more clued up and then you can get on with ordering on for yourself- let’s just hope you get what you ordered!

Folding Wheelchair

Once you've decided to use a manual wheelchair, you will have to decide between a rigid or folding frame. Folding wheelchairs tend to have a little more flexibility than rigid models.

This flex can be an advantage when you are traveling over slightly uneven surfaces, because the chair's frame will bend to accommodate the surface and all of its wheels will remain on the ground. However, on a hard floor surface, rigid-frame chairs prove to be much more stable.
Folding wheelchairs are available in lightweight and heavy-duty models, for between $1000 and $3,500. If you are a new wheelchair user it is best to try out both rigid and folding chairs to see which suits you best.
To help you choose, here are some hints about owning a folding wheelchair:
Advantages of a Folding Wheelchair:

Folds for car transport

Can be folded and stowed without removing any parts

Its flexibility keeps all four wheels on the ground on rough surfaces

Has swing-away leg rests, where rigid frames have fixed front ends

Stores in out of the way places in small homes

Disadvantages of a Folding Wheelchair:

Has adjustable and removable parts that could break or be lost

Maybe too flimsy for certain sports

Seat angle is usually not adjustable

Harder to push than rigid models

Generally heavier than rigid chairs

Less durable then rigid models

Garage Lifts - Vehicle Lift

Garage lifts are also known as vehicle lifts or car ramps and are usually a hydraulic systems for hoisting up vehicles such as cars and vans -enabling mechanics to access the undercarriage. A wide range of Garage Lifts

Types of Garage Lift include:
One Post or Single Post Lift: This allows one vehicle to be hoisted up with access to the driver’s door. Another vehicle can be parked underneath when the platform is raised sufficiently, allowing this lift to also act as a space saver.

Double Post Hydraulic Lift: Both posts work in unison to raise and lower a vehicle. When the platform is raised high enough another vehicle can be parked underneath, saving space. Driver and front passenger doors can be accessed.

Four Post Hydraulic Lifts: There are two types, one for light commercial vehicles with a weight limit and the other for heavy duty usage. The latter is used for large commercial vehicles over a certain weight and is designed like a runway.

Parking Lifts: These are handy lifts to have in a garage because of their space-saving ability. The ability to also maximise profits when several lifts are employed at the same time is obvious. All that is required is a level standing area. The lifts are free-standing and can accommodate most vehicles safely and securely.

Scissor Lifts: These are impressive-looking, but slow moving, lifts consisting of a platform that moves only in a vertical direction. The hydraulic lifting posts take on the appearance of a pair of scissors as they open to raise the platform and close again to lower it.

Motorcycle Lifts: Resembling a large ironing board, these hydraulic lifts are specially designed to accommodate motorbikes. There are also broader based hydraulic lifts used for quad bike maintenance.

Handicapped Van Buying Tips

Handicapped vans are converted vans that obtain all of the necessary equipment needed to transport individuals with disabilities. Conversions include increasing the cab size, ramps, removable seats and tie-downs. For safety reasons, it is important to get input from a physician and certified driver rehab specialist before you buy handicapped vans.

1. Features

Review specific features of handicapped vans if you are interested in buying a model. First, check the height of the lowered floor or raised roof to ensure this provides adequate room for disabled passengers. The flooring and ramp should have anti-skid materials installed. The front passenger seat can typically be removed to make room for handicapped passengers. If the passengers you plan to transport use a wheelchair, you need to have wheelchair tie-down points as well as wheelchair straps and brackets. Different ramp options are available and can include either motorized or manual ramp control. Make sure the handicapped van has passed crash tests and includes standard safety equipment, like airbags and ABS.

To look at features and handicapped van types, browse online sellers of this vehicle type. Some examples of online handicapped van retailers include AMS Vans and Midwest Mobility.

2. Van Conversion Kits

There are certain companies that produce kits that allow a full-sized van to be converted to a handicapped van. Manufacturers of handicapped conversion kits for full-sized and minivans include Braun, Ricon, VMI and Eclipse. These kits can be installed on vans from car makers such as Chevrolet, Toyota, Ford and General Motors. A handicapped van conversion kit will likely include raised doors, ramp, lowered floors, recessed seat belt retractors and composite door extensions. You need to read through the specifications of a van conversion kit to determine compatible van types. Van conversion kits can cost upwards of $20,000.

3. Warranty for Handicapped Van

If you need to buy a handicapped van, you will want good warranty coverage on the purchase. You should have a minimum seven-year or 100,000-mile limited warranty protection for new and used handicapped vans. An extended warranty should be considered as well since you are likely going to spend at least $20,000 on the handicapped van. Extended warranties for handicapped vans can include coverage for both the vehicle and equipment pieces.

Looking for a Boost? For some people, a simple act like standing up from a seated position is exhausting even to think about. They might have chronic back pain, arthritis, or even more serious diseases like Parkinson's or Lou Gehrig's (ALS). For anyone who has trouble with the transition from seated to standing or vice versa, electric lift chairs can provide the assistance they need to move on their own.

An electric lift chair looks pretty much like a normal chair, or usually like a comfortable recliner. But there's an important difference between the two. The electric lift chair rises up and forward on command, allowing a person to simply lean back and perch on the front edge of the seat.

Then, the chair smoothly lowers back to the seated position. To get up, the user just presses the button again, and the chair rises back to the almost standing position, allowing the user to stand with minimum effort.

Electric lift chairs are available from several manufacturers. Some, like La-z-boy, are chair manufacturers who have added lift capabilities to their model line. Other chairs, like the Pride electric lift chairs manufactured by Pride Mobility Products Corporation, are from manufacturers of assistive devices who either focus exclusively on lift chairs or have added lift chairs to their product list.

Lift chairs come in a wide variety of styles and fabrics, allowing the user to match the chair to their existing home decor. It's even possible to find electric leather lift chairs, providing the ultimate in comfort, luxury and ease of care.

Today's electric lift chairs are quite reliable. If you decide to purchase a new electric lift chair for your home use, then it will probably come with a warranty of one to three years for parts and one year for labor. In the event you have problems with your chair after the warranty expires, you may be in the market for electric lift chair parts. It's difficult to tell how much you might save by fixing the chair yourself. Certainly it's not something you'd want to attempt unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing.

If you decide to go for a used model, then you may want to replace some of the electric lift chair parts. The chair will usually have one or two motors (or in rare instances, three). Other parts you might want to check out are the hand controls, gears and switches.

You should spend some time deciding where to put your new electric lift chair before it arrives at your home. You'll need to be sure that there's a electrical socket nearby. Leave enough room between the back of the chair and the wall for the chair to fully recline. Although the lift chair provides a lot of convenience in terms of helping the user stand up and sit down, it's not convenient to move at all. So make sure you get it set up in the right place the first time, or at least be sure about the location before the delivery guys leave.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://stairchair-lift.blogspot.com/2009/12/looking-for-boost-try-lift-chair.html' title='Looking for a Boost? The stair chair lift has been especially helpful for people who are unable to climb stairs. It's now possible for anyone to live in a multi-story home, regardless of their physical abilities. There are several things to consider about stair lifts before choosing and installing a model in your home.

First, think about who will be using the stair chair lift on a daily basis. How tall are they, and how much do they weigh? Their physical characteristics will have an impact on the style and model of stair lift you choose. Each lift has a weight capacity and the seats vary in size. The weight capacity of most stair chair lifts range from 275 to 350 pounds. The height of the seat at the bottom of the stairs should be considered, especially if the user is short. You'll want to make sure that you install a stair lift that fits the potential user comfortably.

Another aspect of the potential lift user that should be taken into consideration is their ability to transfer to the seat of the stair chair lift. Are they normally able to walk and just have trouble with climbing stairs? Or are they confined to a wheelchair? If they can walk, then a normal stair chair lift should work fine. If they need to stay in their wheelchair, then a wheelchair stair lift will be required instead.

If the user suffers from low back pain, then you should pay special attention to the smoothness of the stops and starts of the stair lift. Any jerking motion or sudden, unexpected movements could cause pain or further injury to the user.

What about the stairs themselves? Are they straight or curved? Installing a stair chair lift is a fairly simple process if the stairs are straight. But curved stairs may require custom fitting of the tracks. In the case of a curved stairway, a manufacturer's representative will likely need to visit your home and measure. Once tracks are custom-built to match the curves in your stairway, they'll need to be professionally installed to avoid roughness or binding as the chair glides up the stair lift.

How steep are your stairs? The maximum angle that most stair chair lifts can climb is 45 degrees. If you have narrow stairs, then there may be a problem fitting the stair lift onto your stairway with room left for climbing the stairs normally. If the user is tall, then they'll also need room for their legs when riding the stair lift.

The stair lift rail mounts to the stairs themselves, so they must be in sound condition for safety. Another safety consideration is making sure that there's adequate lighting at both the top and bottom of the stairs. All stair lifts require electricity, either for operation of the lift or for recharging batteries. Find out about and comply with all local building regulations related to the electrical plug for your stair chair lift.

With the enabling technology of stair chair lifts and wheelchair stair lifts, there's no longer any reason for disabled individuals to feel restricted in their housing choices.

Transport wheelchair informations

A transport wheelchair is a mobility chair designed for convenience, short-distance use and easy handling by a caregiver.

Lightweight and foldable, these wheelchairs are easily moved and typically fit in the trunk of most vehicles. There is even a model designed to fold into a bag to be carried over the shoulder.

Transport wheel chairs are practical for errands and trips to the store or the doctor. Hospitals sometimes utilize these flexible mobility chairs to move patients around their facilities.

You can identify a transport chair by looking at its rear wheels. They are much smaller than standard manual wheelchairs and similar in size to the front wheels.

Without large rear wheels, the user must rely on someone else to push the chair, which is why the transport chair is often referred to as a companion wheelchair.

Transport wheelchairs provide many advantages:

Weight: As the name implies, they are easy to transport because they typically weigh around 15 to 20 pounds, which is much less than a manual wheelchair.

Storage: They are easier to store than traditional manual and electric wheelchairs. Most are small enough to fit into the trunk of a compact car.

Expense: They are less expensive than traditional and electric wheel chairs. Prices start at around $99 and can range up to $350, depending on features.

When looking for a companion chair, there are three major factors to take into consideration.

Chair Weight: These chairs are usually made from lightweight aluminum or steel tubing. Make sure the chair you select is easy to lift, fold and move into and out of vehicles.

Comfort: Transport wheel chairs are not designed for all-day use. Even so, it is important to find one that is comfortable. The most common seat width is 19 inches; though, many models are available in 22 and 24 inch seat widths. A cushion or pad can be used to make the chair more comfortable.

Maximum Carry Weight: Many heavy-duty models have the ability to support up to 250 pounds. Always check weight capacity before making your purchase.

Other features to look for include a fold down back, swing away footrests, added upholstery, removable arms, padded arm rests, attendant-operated hand brakes, non-skid footplates, back pocket and warranties.

Above all, one of the most important aspects of owning a transport chair is the freedom and flexibility it provides the individual and the caregiver.

Pride Lift Chairs

These Lift Chairs are easy to use and look like ordinary furniture. Power wheelchairs with belt drives are typically very quiet, but they require more maintenance. Modern gear drives are fairly quiet and low-maintenance, but they tend to wear out more quickly then belt drives, and get noisier in the process.

Electric wheelchairs vary in ruggedness. Low-end electric powered wheelchairs have light frames that are suitable for indoor use, but their wheelchair frames crack, front forks bend, and wheelchair motors die when they are used to excess in the outdoors. The latest high-priced electric wheelchairs are more rugged and reliable, with frames designed to handle more weight. Some newer electric models even have spring suspension, which allows a smooth ride over uneven territory.

Electric wheelchairs currently cost between $1,600 and $7,500 online, and are available in three basic models: rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and mid-wheel drive.

Rear-wheel drive wheelchairs are the traditional and most popular style. They are generally faster then front-wheel models but provide poor turning capabilities in comparison to front-wheel and mid-wheel models.

Front-wheel drive wheelchairs have become more common because they provide tighter turning functions. Most front-wheel drive wheelchairs have a slightly lower top speed than rear-wheels because they tend to turn too readily at high speeds.

Mid-wheel drive wheelchairs provide the tightest turning of all, but have a tendency to be unsteady when stopping and starting. Here at 1800 wheelchair.com we can fit you with a power chair to suit your needs. Our staff is ready to answer all your questions. We offer a wide variety of powerchairs from leading manufacturers that are fully customizable. Power wheelchairs offer a number of leg, arm and seating options to accommodate a wide range of users.

When selecting a power wheelchair one should consider where the chair will primarily be used (indoor, outdoor or both), how often the chair be transported in a car and any specific seating/accessory needs. Below is a brief outline of the three types of powerchairs 1-800-Wheelchair.com offers. If you are not sure where to begin or if you need help picking the right chair for you, please call our expert support staff.

Transportable Power Wheelchairs: Generally weighing less than 100 lbs, these powerchairs offer mobility in a light package. Component parts assemble quickly and allow for easy transfer in and out of your car's trunk. Transportable electric wheelchairs have a compact size ideal for confined spaces or narrow doorways. These lightweight frames easily fold or disassemble into manageable pieces making them the lightest and easiest powerchairs to take along with you.

Powerbase Power Wheelchairs: Identified by their motor and wheel placement, powerbase chairs provide a comfortable ride, a tight turning radius and great battery range. Powerbase electric wheelchairs offer a wide range of options for suspension, driving, seating and handling. Generally, these chairs have a low center of gravity, making your ride smooth, stable and safe. Some powerbase wheelchairs have suspension packages making them ideal for outdoor use; other powerchairs are designed with a very small turning radius, perfect for indoor use in tight quarters. Powerbase wheelchairs generally don't fold or disassemble and need to be transported using lifts and ramps.

Heavy Duty Power Wheelchairs: Built for outdoor use, these powerchairs can handle almost any surface you'll likely encounter on a daily basis. Heavy duty powerchairs have rear, front and mid wheel drive options, larger wheels and are designed to provide a smooth ride over rough terrain and up some inclines. Larger motors and longer frames allow and increase of torque over standard power wheelchairs.

Quickie Wheelchairs & Power Wheelchairs

Quickie wheel chairs and Quickie power wheelchairs by Sunrise Medical are top quality products we like to recommend to customers with limited mobility. Wheelchair maintenance is crucial to making sure your chair is a safe and efficient ride.

This section takes a look at some key parts to your wheelchair. Each page tells you why the specific part is important and how to make sure you have the right part for your chair.

For those of you who have a powered wheelchair, you know how important a wheelchair battery is. There is nothing worse than being out and having your battery go dead with no extra charge nearby.

There are different chargers available for different types of batteries and buying the wrong charger can be a big mistake. Your battery likely requires 1 of 3 types of chargers. The first charger is for wet batteries; which applies a chemical reaction between lead and sulphuric acid to create an electric charge. The second type of charger is for a gel battery; which contains a mixture of sulphuric acid, fumed silica, pure water, and phosphoric acid, which forms the gel. The third type of charger is for an AGM battery. This type of battery has an absorbent glass mat in between the plates and is soaked with acid electrolyte.

Even with a charged battery, if you don't have the right wheels you aren't going to get very far. Casters are small wheels that are positioned at the front of your chair and provide support for the wheelchair base. Casters come in all shapes and sizes. Finding the right castors for your chair can be a tedious task. The average range of caster size is between 2 ¾- and 8 ¼-inches. The proper caster size is selected by measuring your chair's ability to turn; versus its ability to go over bumps.

Wall guards are a sometimes important, but often overlooked wheelchair accessory. They're not attached to your wheelchair, but are necessary if you plan on using your wheelchair at home. To help ease your mind about banging into walls with your chair, installing proper wall guards can do wonders. Wall guards come in different sizes - for example 3-inch rails will protect the wall from the bottom of your chair; while 6-inch guards will cover the wall up to armchair level. Most wall guards are made of aluminium and have a vinyl covering.

The best way to determine the parts that are right for your chair is to do some research about the many different brands and styles available. Once you have an idea, talk to your local wheelchair manufacturer about the best parts for your wheelchair and your lifestyle.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; The term elevator generally denotes a unit with automatic safety devices; the very earliest units were called hoists. Elevators consist of a platform or car traveling in vertical guides in a shaft or hoistway, with related hoisting and lowering mechanisms and a source of power. The development of the modern elevator profoundly affected both architecture and the mode of development of cities by making many-storied buildings practical.

Although hoists and primitive elevators operated by human and animal power or by water wheels were in use as early as the 3rd century BC, the modern power elevator is largely a product of the 19th century. Most elevators of the 19th century were powered by steam engines, either directly or through some form of hydraulic drive In the early 19th century, hydraulic plunger elevators were used in some European factories. In this type, later used to some extent in the United States and more extensively elsewhere, the car is mounted on a hollow steel plunger that drops into a cylinder sunk into the ground.

Water forced into the cylinder under pressure raises the plunger and car, which fall by gravity when water is released. In early installations the main valve controlling the flow of water was operated by hand by means of ropes running vertically through the car; lever control and pilot valves regulating acceleration and deceleration were later improvements.
<u1:p></u1:p>

A forerunner of the modern traction elevator was in use in Great Britain in 1835. In this case the hoisting rope passed over a belt-driven sheave, or pulley, to a counterweight traveling in guides. The downward pull of the two weights held the rope tight against its sheave, creating sufficient adhesive friction, or traction, between the two so that the turning sheave pulled the rope along.
<u1:p></u1:p>
The history of power elevators in the U.S. began in 1850, when a crude freight hoist operating between two adjacent floors was installed in a New York City building. In 1853, at the New York Crystal Palace exposition, the American inventor and manufacturer Elisha Otis exhibited an elevator equipped with a device called a safety to stop the fall of the car if the hoisting rope broke. In this event a spring would operate two pawls on the car, forcing them into engagement with racks at the sides of the shafts so as to support the car.

This invention gave impetus to elevator construction. Three years later the first passenger elevator in the U.S., designed by Otis, was installed in a New York City store. In these early elevators, a steam engine was connected by belt and gears to a revolving drum on which the hoisting rope was wound. In 1859 an elevator raised and lowered by a vertical screw was installed in the Fifth Avenue Hotel in York City.

In the 1870s the rope-geared hydraulic elevator was introduced. The plunger was replaced in this type by a relatively short piston moving in a cylinder that was mounted, either vertically or horizontally, within the building; the effective length of the stroke of the piston was multiplied by a system of ropes and sheaves. Because of its smoother operation and greater efficiency, the hydraulic elevator generally replaced the type with a rope wound on a revolving drum.

Electric Elevators

The electric motor was introduced in elevator construction in 1880 by the German inventor Werner von Siemens. His car, carrying the motor below, climbed its shaft by means of revolving pinion gears that engaged racks at the sides of the shaft. An electric elevator was constructed in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1887, operated by an electric motor turning a revolving drum on which the hoisting rope was wound.

Within the next 12 years, electric elevators with worm gearing connecting the motor and drum came into general use except in tall buildings. In the drum elevator the length of the hoisting rope, and therefore the height to which the car can rise, are limited by the size of the drum; space limitations and manufacturing difficulties prevented the use of the drum mechanism in skyscrapers. The advantages of the electric elevator, however, including efficiency, relatively low installation costs, and virtually constant speed regardless of the load, spurred inventors to search for a way of using electric motive power in skyscrapers. Counterweights creating traction on electrically driven sheaves solved the problem.

Since the introduction of electric motive power for elevators, various improvements have been made in motors and methods of control. At first, single-speed motors only were used. Because a second, lower speed was desirable to facilitate leveling the car with landings, low-speed auxiliary motors were introduced, but later several systems were devised for varying speed by varying the voltage supplied to the hoisting motor. In recent years devices for automatic leveling of cars at landings are commonly used.

Originally the motor switch and the brakes were operated mechanically from the car by means of hand ropes. Soon electromagnets, controlled by operating switches in the car, were introduced to throw the motor switch and to release a spring brake.
<u1:p></u1:p>
Push-button control was an early development, later supplemented by elaborate signal systems. Safety devices have been highly developed. In 1878 Charles Otis, a son of the inventor of the original car safety, introduced a similar mechanism connected to a speed governor that applied the safety if the car was traveling at a dangerous speed, whether or not the rope broke. In later car safeties, clamps were used to grip the guide rails so as to bring the car to a stop gradually.
<u1:p></u1:p>
Today so-called governors control a series of devices to slow down the car if it is speeding only slightly, to shut off the motor and apply an electromagnetic brake if the car continues to accelerate, and then to apply the mechanical safety if the speed becomes dangerous. Terminal switches independent of other controlling mechanisms stop the car at the upper and lower limits of travel. For low-speed cars, spring bumpers are provided at the bottom of the hoistway; high-speed cars are buffered by pistons fitting into oil-filled cylinders. Electric circuits, completed by contact points in hoistway doors on various floors and in car gates, permit operation only when gates and doors are closed. The great advances in electronic systems during World War II resulted in many changes in elevator design and installation.

Computing equipment was developed for compiling automatically information that vastly improved the operational efficiency of elevators in large buildings. The equipment, which became available in 1948, made possible the solution of such scheduling problems as morning and evening peak loads and traffic balance and the elimination of operators. The use of automatic programming equipment eventually eliminated the need for starters at the ground level of large commercial buildings, and thus the operation of elevators became completely automatic.
<u1:p></u1:p>
Automatic elevators are now generally employed in all types of buildings. The World Trade Center in New York City, with its two 110-story towers, had 244 elevators with carrying capacities of up to 4536 kg (10,000 lb) and speeds of up to 488 m (1600 ft) per min The 110-story Sears-Roebuck Building in Chicago has 109 elevators with speeds of up to 549 m (1800 ft) per min.

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"><span style="font-family: inherit; On the other, as the name suggests, a lightweight and folding wheelchair is very secure and flexible to allow it to be easily folded into the car for convenient travel.
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>
<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">A major advantage of lightweight folding wheelchairs is that it is of similar durability and strength as the conventional wheelchairs. It has been particularly created to not feel restricted by hefty wheelchairs and to enjoy the usual daily activities.
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>
<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">The lightweight folding wheelchairs are generally just a very comfortable char set upon wheels. The occupier still has to thrust the wheelchair by turning the chrome which is attached to the wheels. Two toggle breaks are also present to stop the wheelchair from moving forwards.
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>
<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">Lightweight folding wheelchairs also contain adjustable foot and leg rests. It may also include a light, cushioned table with full arm rests that may be detached if not in use. The wheelchair conveniently weighs half of that of a standard type wheelchair.
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>
<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">A major feature of these lightweight folding wheelchairs is a specially designed cylinder composed of alloy metals to provide strength and lightness. Other characteristics include sturdy front wheels; back wheels that have a rapid discharge attribute, hardened axles and accurate rims made of alloy metals in addition to thrust rims to provide improved smooth motion. It has the ability to hold weight up to 100 kilograms. Usually these types of wheelchairs weigh 11 kilograms and are available in a range of sizes. However, if the user exceeds these sizes, larger dimensions can be requested.
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>
<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"> There are various designs and features to select from to meet the users’ specific desires. These include an adjustable back height, detachable arm and leg rests, foot rests, fast release footplates and features that enable posture alterations. You will find this wheelchair to be flexible and not hefty that will usually hold you down and it is also a reliable choice if you wish to easily carry your wheelchair and leave ample room for your other belongings at the back of your car.
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

Choosing Good Tv Lift Cabinets

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">Are you looking to purchase a TV lift cabinet for your new flat panel LCD or plasma television? At the bottom of this post you will find a few links that we have provided to other sections of our website that include the information that you are looking for about TV lift furniture. Before we get to the links though, we wanted to give you some quick and basic information regarding TV lifts.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">Like TV wall mounts, the popularity of TV lift had absolutely skyrocketed over the past five years. This is a direct result of flat panel plasma TVs coming onto the market and their subsequent drop in price. TV lifts have not caught on at quite the same level as wall mounts due to their higher prices but when you consider their expensive nature their rise in popularity has been quite astounding.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">TV lifts come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. They vary so much that they can come as a TV lift cabinet or even as a picture lift that raises a picture out of the way of for television viewing. In general though most TV lifts are a cabinet or dresser type piece of furniture that, with the press of a button, the motorized mechanism lifts the television out so that it can be watched. Then once finished, another press of the button drops the TV back down into the cabinet for safe, secure, and out of view storage.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">If you are considering a TV lift I highly recommend it. TV lifts come with the advantage of being able store your TV out of sight while not in use. This is good for two reasons, with the first being it keeps your TV in a safe, protected area while not in use so that you don't have to worry about it getting broken, especially if you have children. The second benefit is that for some the sight of a TV is not very good and they would simply rather have it hidden while not in use. Besides these tangible benefits TV lifts are also simply exquisite looking and they can live in up any room and impress your guests.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">
</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">In our reviews of different TV lifts we took a look at a bunch of TV lifts in an attempt to give you information on lots of different types of TV lifts. We wanted to do this in order to give you the chance to learn about all different types of lift consoles so that you could be sure to get the one that was best for you.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup">In our reviews of different cell phone signal boosters we looked at a bunch of different cell boosters that worked as cell range extenders. The reviews below consist of some great cell phone amplifiers and some not so great ones too. Our goal here was to provide reviews of a wide range of different types of cellular boosters that have different features in order to give you a good idea of what is out there so you can choose the booster that is best for you.</m:defjc></m:rmargin></m:lmargin></m:dispdef></m:smallfrac>

<m:smallfrac m:val="off"><m:dispdef><m:lmargin m:val="0"><m:rmargin m:val="0"><m:defjc m:val="centerGroup"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; There are those home owners who have a need for easier access now, those who are considering future needs and those who see the value and convenience of a home elevator regardless of mobility issues. Steps are great for exercise but not very convenient when you have a trunk full of groceries and the garage and kitchen are on different levels, or when you need to move bulky items from floor to floor. In fact, stairs can be down right dangerous in certain situations.

Residential Elevators are not just for luxury homes

For many years most of us believed a residential elevator was decadent, out of reach, that only millionaires could or should have one. We all just assumed we couldn’t afford an elevator in our home, end of discussion, end of dream. In reality a residential elevator can be as low as the price of a midsize car and if you consider the costs of building a dream home today, a home elevator is right inline with a great media room or some professional high quality kitchen appliances. Remember when swimming pools were only for the wealthy and everyone knew which house on the block had one? It’s your turn; be the envy of the neighborhood, be the first to own a residential elevator.

Residential Elevators are an easier and safer way to travel

Carrying a large or awkward item up and down the stairs could result in personal injury, damage to the home and/or to the item. With today’s rising healthcare costs that simple fall on the stairs could end up costing you thousands of dollars which could have paid for the elevator. Don’t forget those injuries that occur outside of the home, we all have, at one point or another suffered from a strained muscle, a sprained ankle or worse; and were forced to either climb the stairs one painful step at a time or just make do in a downstairs room. The home elevator will allow the homeowner to travel safely and comfortably from floor to floor.

For a growing number of individuals with hip or joint pain just walking can be painful. While a one level home might eliminate some issues (climbing stairs), walking from one end of the home to the other can be a long and painful journey. With a well designed home and a strategically located elevator, the number of steps required to get from room to room can be dramatically reduced.

Residential Elevators will increase the ability to sell your home

The more accessible the home, the more appealing it will be to a wider variety of potential buyers. Many buyers walk away from a home they may have really liked because they are worried about their current or future mobility, or worse they may never even get out of their cars to tour it. If you can remove the accessibility objection you will have increased the number of potential buyers; this is especially significant since a growing portion of the buying population is approaching or are in their ‘golden years’. Beyond the accessibility issue, many home buyers prefer the architectural and design possibilities of multiple stories with lofts, vaulted ceilings, etc. A residential elevator is a memorable and desirable feature that will help to separate and elevate a home from it’s competitors.

Residential Elevators can reduce your construction costs

Simply put, it is more expensive to build outward than it is to build upward. Foundation and roofing costs remain fairly stable if you increase the square footage by adding additional floors. For every square foot of living space you build outward, you will be adding to the roof and foundation costs. These cost savings could be applied to the purchase of your residential elevator.

A Guide To Wheelchair Rental For Travel Or Temporary Impairment

Previously we discussed buying second hand wheelchairs and heres another option, which is wheelchair rental. This form of rental of wheelchair is ideal for people who suffer injuries temporarily impairing their mobility or people who are travelling or going on vacation who have disabilities or impaired mobility both benefit from wheelchair rental services. Wheelchairs, scooters, and electric wheelchairs can be rented locally or reserved online.

Health insurance will sometimes covers the cost of wheelchair rentals, if you have a doctor’s prescription. Pharmacies, hospitals, and clinics usually rent wheelchairs. Check your yellow pages, a section on wheelchairs may exist.

Wheelchair rental services are available for travellers so if you’re planning a vacation, or travelling by plane, look into it, it will make your travelling experience more comfortable. Airports will offer wheelchair and scooter rentals for travellers. You can rent a wheelchair-accessible vehicle and wheelchair with the same services and have everything waiting at the airport. You should be able to find a wheelchair or scooter rental service in any major airport or city. Renting scooters can make a visit to a theme park or other tourist attraction easier for people with reduced mobility as well.

Clothing design for people in wheelchairs has been slower to evolve than wheelchair design. You can get a variety of wheelchairs to match any disability with any cause, but most wheelchair-appropriate clothing design is designed to be accessible to anyone.

If you’re going on a cruise ship, make plans in advance and be sure to book with a cruise line that will offer you accommodation with your needs taken into consideration.

Wheelchair rental services help people with limited mobility, offering convenient services for travellers and for people who suffer injuries.

Remember researching before renting your wheelchair will pay off.

The Lightweight Wheelchair For You

By emily

There are many different wheelchair manufacturers offering lightweight manual wheelchairs. With so many manufacturers, types, options, and features it can be confusing when choosing the lightweight wheelchair for you. These wheelchairs come in three main types. You will be able to choose from a rigid, a folding or a titanium model manual wheelchair. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Rigid Lightweight wheelchairs are the ultra light of these particular types of wheelchairs. These keep their shape and you cannot fold them down, which makes them harder to store should you need to do that. However, with out nuts, bolts and hinges to allow the chair to fold up it is kept at the lightest weight possible. This is the type of wheelchair you choose if you are interested in going fast, doing sports with your chair, or you will not need to fold it up in order to take it with you. These chairs also come with many great customizable features such as push handles, flip-up armrests and even light up casters if you wish.

Folding lightweight wheelchairs are designed to do just as their name suggests. They are still light, but they cannot be as light as the rigid chairs because of the parts necessary to fold it up. With a simple pull of the seat and a push of the arms, it folds up. It can then be put into the trunk of a car and it is easily stored folded up in a closet. This is a great option for those who don't need to use their lightweight wheelchair everyday or who will only be in a wheelchair for a short period.

Finally, there are titanium versions. These lightweight wheelchairs come in both the rigid and the folding varieties. They are however made from titanium, which is lightweight, strong and more durable. The metal also has some shock absorbing properties. These are more expensive then the other varieties and they take longer to custom build, but they are the most luxurious choice for both rigid and folding lightweight wheelchairs.

These should be considered if you feel that your chair might get a lot of use, you may be using it heavily, or you want it to last longer through regular use. These are more likely to be durable and to see less wear and tear with heavy use.

No matter which type of wheelchair you choose, you will be able to get mobile again. These chairs are for those who have the ability and desire to be independent. Because of their lightweight design they are easier to propel, easier to maneuver, and easier to travel with. They are also less expensive then traditional wheelchairs. Each such wheelchair will be marked K0004 because this is the medical marking for the lightweight variety of wheelchairs. With so many advantages to the lightweight you now only need to consider what you will be using your chair for, how you will transport it, how often you will transport it, and whether you will use it indoors, outdoors, or both.

Things You Should Know About Home Elevator

There are three types of elevator drive systems that are currently offered in the market place.

A Roped Hydraulic System – This is the most popular system as it offers many of the features of commercial elevator technology: Quiet, smooth operation with a built-in emergency lowering function in the event of a power failure.

Winding Cable/Drum Systems – This drive system was more widely used prior to the introduction of hydraulics. The cost is usually a little less than the hydraulic system; however, most manufacturers have added many hydraulic type features and benefits to the cable/drum equipment as options. These systems can provide a significant savings if the add-on features are not needed. It is important to note that the winding cable/drum system has remote machine room limitations, which may have an impact on your machine room location.

Roller Chain Systems – This system uses a roller chain over a sprocket with counter weights. Due to the design, there may be more nose during the operation. This system currently has limitations in flexible car sizes, machine room location and code compliance with the National Code Standard adopted by the state of New Jersey.

Types of Car Gates

The most widely used car gates are Scissor Gates, which are available in painted metals, bronze, stainless steel and brass. Many homebuyers like the antique look of the scissor gate; however, there are safety issues. There is a potential concern of the gate pinching fingers when small children are present.

A Woodfold Panel Accordion Gate, often considered the safest option for home elevators, is also the most popular. The gates are available in various finishes of wood, vinyl and acrylics.

Sliding Car and Hoist-Way Entrances – Newly introduced into the home market from the consumer market, the sliding car and hoist-way entrance in now an affordable functional and aesthetically pleasing option. This application also eliminates barriers for those in wheelchairs.

In order to further customize the look of your elevator, you can choose from several options for the interior of the car. These options include: Plywood (you can provide your own finishes), Melamine, Plastic Laminate, Wood Veneers, a variety of wood packages and custom interiors. Car trim is usually available in stainless steel, bronze, brass or wood finishes.

Optional Features

Some optional features to consider are the following:

Home Park: This option sends the elevator to a designated floor when not in use.

Power Gate Operator: An automatic power gate operator, available for the Accordion Gate only.

Key Operation: Any or all car and landing controls can be keyed.

Sliding Car and Hoist Way Entrances: This is a fully automatic gate and door system, which operates in the same manner as commercial elevators.

Hoist Way Door Sub Frames: These are metal frames with a code compliant profile (moves the door closer to the elevator) with a recessed interlock. A more reliable and aesthetically pleasing option.

Custom Car Sizes: An additional charge is required for a car configuration other that the standard size (12 sq. ft. or under). An additional charge may also be required to accommodate a larger sized platform which allows for increased capacity as may be needed by the home owner.

Taller Car: An additional charge for a taller car (over 80″) which is selected when the elevator has tall users or the customers would like to hang s car light chandelier.

Phone Cabinet: The standard package provides a white plastic phone mounted in the car. A stainless steel, bronze or brass phone box is offered at a slight upcharge.

Power Swing Hoist Way Door Operators: This option is a convenient and sometimes necessary modification that can assist users in wheelchairs. This option can be added after installation.

Tank Heater: This optional equipment heats the oil only in the tank. Provisions should also be made by the designer or builder to provide an environment in the hoist-way and machine room if between 60 and 100 degrees.

The following questions should be addressed by the designer with the owner before the final design drawings are completed. Consider of these questions beforehand and you will avoid missing the opportunity to make much-needed modifications to your home elevator.

What size platform is needed to meet the owner’s and their families’ current and future needs for the elevator? To accommodate a wheelchair? To accommodate a wheelchair and a companion? A larger hoistway and deeper pit may be necessary to accommodate these needs.

Does the homeowner’s family want an appointed care with a chandelier or just a taller car? Note: Standard car heights usually require a minimum overhead clearance of eight feet in the hoist-way above the top floor.
